English Stage 4 outcomes and content

Cross-curriculum content
Aboriginal and Indigenous knowledge and understanding including aspects of culture, experiences and achievements.

Outcome 1
A student responds to and composes texts for understanding, interpretation, critical analysis and pleasure.

Students learn to:
1.1 respond to imaginative, factual and critical texts, including the required range of texts, through wide and close listening, reading and viewing
1.7 respond to and compose texts beyond the literal level.

Outcome 2
A student uses a range of processes for responding to and composing texts.

Students learn to:
2.4 use processes of planning, including investigating, interviewing, selecting, recording and organising ideas, images and information for specific purposes in composing.

Students learn about:
2.9 techniques for planning and rehearsing including brainstorming, mindmapping, storyboarding, role-play and improvisation.

Outcome 3
A student responds to and composes texts in different technologies.

Students learn to:
3.1 use the features of information and communication technologies to compose a range of imaginative, critical and factual texts for television, the internet, radio, email and text messaging

3.3 use the features of information and communication technologies, including word processing, importing and manipulating graphics, and formatting to compose a variety of texts for different purposes and audiences.

Students learn about:
3.8 terminology associated with responding to and composing information and communication technology (ICT) texts

3.11 etiquette and ethical behaviour associated with email and internet use.

Outcome 9
A student demonstrates understanding that texts express views of their broadening world and their relationships within it.

Students learn to:
9.1 recognise, reflect on and explain the connections between their own experiences and the world of texts
9.2 compose texts that reflect their broadening world and their relationships within it.

Students learn about:
9.8 the ways in which their experiences and perspectives shape their responses to texts.

Aspects of Outcome 11 could also be covered if students are asked to reflect on the use of technology in their responding and composing.

PDHPE Stage 4 Knowledge & understanding outcomes

Outcome 4.1 (for Rap point 1 and Rap point 3)
A student describes and analyses the influences on a sense of self.

Students learn about:

  • a sense of self
  • being the same as and different from others
  • factors that influence a sense of self.

Students learn to:

  • explore the influence of the following on a sense of self
  • who I am
  • where I come from
  • who I relate to
  • what I can do
  • what I believe and value.

Outcome 4.2 (for Rap point 2 and Rap point 3)
A student identifies and selects strategies that enhance their ability to cope and feel supported.

Students learn about:

  • changes and challenges
  • sources of change and challenge
  • dealing with conflicting demands.
  • connectedness
  • the importance of connections
  • attributes of being supportive.

Students learn to:

  • develop a realistic sense of their ability to respond to and cope with challenges
  • identify individuals, groups or places to which they feel a strong sense of belonging and explain how these help them to feel supported and connected.

Outcome 4.11
A student selects and uses communication skills and strategies clearly and coherently in a range of new and challenging situations.

Outcome 4.13
A student demonstrates cooperation and support for others in social, recreational and other group contexts.
