This book rap on the Indij readers will be available during Term 4, 2004.

This book rap is suitable for Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) and Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4).

ABSTRACT
Aboriginal people, including school students, collaborated to write these contemporary, imaginative and engaging literacy resources. These Australian stories are told with an authentic Aboriginal voice that speaks to both their own people and the wider community. A diverse range of positive role models includes a mother who studies at night, a successful sportsperson, and strong families. A variety of genres is used. Some are written in standard Australian English, and some use Aboriginal English. The teachers guide provides clear lesson suggestions and proformas , which teachers can use or adapt, supporting a guided reading approach. The guide contains material which is ideal for group work and also tutor support activities. It also provides essential Cultural information for each title to support Aboriginal perspectives and the appropriate use of these resources.

Joining the rap

From 11 October 2004, you can view the support material for this rap and prepare to participate by entering your email address in the boxes below and clicking the Submit buttons. Please ensure you have registered the email addresses before doing so. Note that the rap does not start till the week of 25 October 2004.

Teacher email will not be archived to protect privacy. The teacher rap runs concurrently with the book rap to provide additional support for teachers, and the opportunity to discuss issues which may arise during the rap.

You will receive confirmation emails for your Class group and the Teacher support listserv. Please save these messages as they contain important email addresses, and simply follow the instructions these contain when posting messages once the rap starts.

Rap points

These discussion questions guide the book rap. The question for the week is posted to the rap at the beginning of that week by the coordinators. Class groups post their answers and can respond via the rap to other school's replies during the relevant week for that rap point.

Term 4, Week 4: week beginning 1 November 2004

As a class, choose one story* then as a whole class jointly construct a written version of the story and post it.

Post a class response to the rap. Your class might wish to respond to the comments from other rappers via the rap.

*from their family stories discussed and shared as per suggested teaching strategies in Program and planning for Rap point 1.

Rap point 2 (For related class activities see Program and planning)

Term 4, Week 5: week beginning 8 November 2004

Create a timeline for an individual:

  • from life or
  • someone known to all the students or
  • a character in one of the Indij readers or
  • a famous person or
  • a teacher or community worker or
  • Getting ready for school

As a class decide on a timeline to share with rappers, and post it to the rap once the teacher has approved the final text.

During this week rappers have the opportunity to ask questions of two of the Indij readers series authors. See details in the suggested teaching activities in Program and planning and watch for messages about what to do from the Rap Coordinator.

Rap point 3 (For related class activities see Program and planning)

Term 4, Week 6: week beginning 15 November 2004

As a whole class write a description of one of the class' favourite characters from the Indij readers series, or a person that they have interviewed or read about during this rap.

Post your description to the rap once the teacher has approved the final text.
