Activity 1: Read and discuss The rainbirds by David

Metzenthen and Sally Rippin.

  • How do the responses of humans impact the story?
  • How does the author use language to create the world of The rainbirds? (RS2.7)

Activity 2: Set up a birdwatching post at school.

  • Find out what types of birds visit your area. Make a fact file on some of these birds. Share these in class . (INVS2.7)

  • Record the numbers of birds that visit your viewing area in a particular time slot. Record your observations as a tally or on a table. Identify some of the birds using your fact file. (LTS2.3)

Those schools near natural bush areas and wetlands will have an increased variety of birds visiting to feed and breed. Visit some websites of wetlands in New South Wales to collect more information. A good example is The Wetlands Centre.

Activity 3: Write a short story.

  • Students working in pairs put together a short story about one variety of birds that visits the school or local area.
  • Try to write with some swirling text as used by the author. (WS2.9)

Activity 4: Compare and contrast
We are now going to compare and contrast the books that we have studied.

  • What differences are there between Home (which has been based on some researched facts) and The rainbirds (which is fiction and based on a fictional or real experience)?
  • Discuss how the grammar of factual and literary descriptions is different because of the purpose of the text and the audience. (RS2.7)
