Rap
point 1
Term 4, Week
2: Week beginning 20 October 2003
This rap point
requires you and your class to answer the following question:
What safety
features might you find, on or around public transport (ie. buses
and trains) that are designed to keep you safe?
Working through
the rap task will help you to answer the question.
Rap Task
Complete the
following task in order to answer the rap question.
Using a Mindmap
(Worksheet 1.1), brainstorm
as a class the types of features that may be found in, on or around
public transport (ie. buses, trains and ferries etc.) that are designed
to keep people safe.
For example: Buses – flashing
lights on the back of school buses when they stop.
You may like
to revisit this mindmap as the rap continues and add to it as more
examples are discovered over the coming weeks.
In small groups,
outline in more detail one of the safety features listed in your
brainstorm. Use Worksheet
1.2 to work through the following questions:
- Why is this
feature important for the safety of passengers?
- How does
this feature help keep passengers safe?
You may also
like to draw or download a photograph of your safety feature. Label
the main parts, using the terminology from your answers to the previous
two questions.
To be sent to the
rap....
Develop a What
am I? that describes your safety feature. Remember to start
with broad suggestions that become more obvious as you move through
the steps.
For example:
What am I?
- I keep people
safe
- I can be
found on all buses that take students to and from school
- Drivers
can see me as they follow or approach the bus
- I am designed
to make cars around buses slow down and look out for pedestrians
- I become
visible when the bus starts to slow down to drop people off
- People know
about me because there are stickers on the back of the bus highlighting
what I do.
What am I?
Answer:
I am flashing lights on the back of a bus.
Vote to decide
on which group’s What am I’ will be sent to the rap. Each
class can send up to three examples – remember, don’t forget to
include the answer.
When your teacher
has approved the final text, send your What am I? to the
rap
