Woodberry Learning Centre (WLC) was established in 2007. It is a school for up to 21 students between Years 4-7 who have been unable to be maintained in their mainstream schools due to their inappropriate and unacceptable behaviours. They usually arrive at WLC feeling disenfranchised and disengaged from their learning. They have low self esteem and failure identities. Our job is to create positive relationships with our students so we can help them to improve educational outcomes and, just as importantly,to believe in themselves and to realize that no matter what has gone on before, their future is spotless, it starts at this moment and is in their hands to choose what it will be. Our underlying pyschological framework is Dr W.Glasser's Choice Theory - an internal cognitive psychology which states that all behaviour is purposeful and is the best attempt we can come up with at the time to meet our 5 basic needs for survival, power & recognition, fun, freedom and love & belonging. We continually help our students to evaluate their behaviours to see if that they have chosen to do (or say) is most likely to get them what they want or to figure out a more effective way of meeting their needs.
