Representing Australia in the 20 km Walk
Hi Everyone
The weather here in Athens is hot, the hottest times seem between 10am and 6pm.The evenings cool down a little which is good. Whilst my race begun at 9am, if it gets too hot the temperature can hinder the endurance events because they last such a long time.
You are very aware of people cheering for you in my event. I have received additional support via the Telstra hero messages from Australia which is a great feeling. Aussies also seemed to be loved in other countries which is nice.
My mum and dad have come over to watch, and as you know my sister Jane is competed in the same event as me so they were able to watch us both. Its great knowing they are here.
When I was younger I was quite good at little athletics, especially in the walk. I also enjoyed running and I did swimming training until I was 20. I won my first state title at 11 for race walking. The most important thing that has helped me to get to where I am is variety in my training and the support of my family. I didn't solely concentrate on race walking until I was 20. I was still swimming and competing in other sports as well.
My event, the 20km walk, started in the Olympic Athletics Stadium and goes out on the road and we do 9 laps of a 2km circuit and finish in the stadium.
To relax I get treatment from physiotherapists and massage therapists. It is also nice to catch up with my mum and dad and watch the Olympics on television.
Almost all of the athletes stay in the Village so you are able to socialise with them a lot. The Village caters for all the athletes needs, gym, training facilities, food, internet and games area and transport.
The food is in the dining hall is free which is great. We have a pass that allows us to get into the dining areas and other specific areas.
I often get questions about what I eat. I try and eat the same type of food I would normally eat before I race as if I was in Australia, like pasta, fruit, vegetables and bread. I try not to change anything or eat strange foods as you may get stomach problems and when walking 20km you don't need any problems with your stomach.
Regards
Natalie
