Kia Ora rappers,

We have found out some changes that have occured in the past 53 years since our
school opened in 1952.
Some of them are:
This year, some major changes happened at our school. We got 3 new classrooms
built and a large area we call the Atrium. The school needed those new rooms
because of the growing number of students attending our school.
On our grounds, a sign with the first principal's name was put up when she
passed away. That sign was put in a new area meant to invite people to sit and
talk and eat their lunch in the shade.
A few years ago, the school got rid of their swimming pool because it was
deteriorating badly. Instead, where the pool was, we now have class gardens,
Each class has one area to look after. We have a garden club at lunchtime and
some people help us looking after them.
At the back of the school ,we have what we call The Forest. It is a large area
with lots of trees....and lots of spiders! We love it!

In class and at home, we are trying to find out facts about the past. This is
what Tom in our class worked on at home:

What I learned about school a long time ago

1. there were not very many people in a class some had about 7. Sometimes
there was only one class for the whole school so everyone sat together

2. They used to give the kids a bottle of milk to drink every morning.

3. They used blackboards and chalk - there was one big chalk board and that
was all

4. In the real olden days they used slate and a board instead of paper and
pencils

5. VAS was surrounded by farms

6. There used to be another road that went between the school and stirling
street which was used to deliver and take away rubbish

7. Lots of kids did not go to school after they were about 12 years old (my
grandad stopped going to school when he was 13).

8. Kids had to walk to school or maybe if it was a long way away they could
ride a horse.

9. they had wooden desks and chairs

10. the classroom was small

11. they used ink and a feather

12. There were no calculators or computers so they used an abacus.

13. The whole school wasnt very big

14. They always used one sheet of paper at a time and they had to use both
sides

15. There were a lot more trees

16. There werent many cars and the roads were smaller

17. there were fires for heaters

We are enjoying the great replies from the rapping schools. We hope you like our
response too.
We are also doing a lot of photo work to illustrate our findings about the
school. Later on, we'll send you photos of our displays.
