Introduction – Howdy rappers,
This is our response to rap point 3.
These are all of the ways we think the Binna Binna Man gives strength of his
people.
On page 26 the author is describing what happens if you kill your totem. He
reminds them of their ancestors’ beliefs and it renews and strengthens them.
The cassowary – your totem – makes a sound in his neck. Then if the Binna
Binna Man hears it he gets to you. You’re DEAD. The totem gives the whole
tribe strength because they feel that they all belong. So they learn that to
kill their totem is very wrong.
When the Binna Binna Man speaks to the boy he says “Boy listen and listen
good”. You have been given these gifts. Your ancestors have been looking
after you, if you turn your back on them you die. He tells the boy to BE WHO
YOU ARE.
On page 37 when Popeye’s car breaks down in Binna Binna Man country the bb
man comes out of the bush and then gives strength to them to start up the
car. Uncle Garth never went back again. They were scared because they didn’t
believe in the Binna Binna Man.
Page 33
Popeye’s story went like this…
A white fella saw the Binna Binna Man he didn’t believe in him. He swerved
in his car and lost control and his ute was half hanging over the cliff. The
Binna Binna Man was said to have helped him. He gave him a push start. That
white fella never came back to Yarrie again. Well that’s what Popeye told
them. The story told them to have strength in the Binna Binna Man, he might
help them when they really needed it.
So the Binna Binna Man is a voice that is also inside aboriginal people and
gives them pride in their culture and beliefs and helps them survive.
