book_week_rap Rap Point 1 from Alyson Simpson

Rap Point One

Hi Rappers! Thanks for all those terrific introductions. Isn't it exciting to see where all the other schools are located. Have you logged them on your Rap Map yet?

Now it is time to start the real Rap work by reading and answering the Rap Points. We start off with a point to make you think about how authors and illustrators work to make you think when you read a book. The book we will be working with this week is the marvelous shortlisted book Fox.

I am thrilled to tell you that we will have a unique opportunity within this week of the rap to discuss the book Fox not only with each other but also with Margaret Wild and Ron Brooks. So welcome Margaret and Ron to our rap. We are very glad to have them online during Rap Point One. They are happy to answer questions if you want to ask them but please make sure you put their names in the subject line so they know the mail is for them That is, address questions for them either to Margaret or Ron. They will read and answer your questions but Margaret can only be online this week so you need to write to her asap. Ron may take longer to reply as he is not on email but someone will pass the messages on to him. Aren't we lucky that they have agreed to join us?

Here is the Rap Point for you to work on this week:

Rap point 1 (For related class activities see Program and planning)

Term 3, Week 3: week beginning 6th August 2001

Fox written by Margaret Wild and illustrated by Ron Brooks

1. In which country might this picture book be set?

2. Look closely at the illustrations and story vocabulary to justify your decision. How do the visual images add meaning to the written text?

3. What design features has the illustrator Ron Brooks utilised in the layout of Fox? How might these design features impact upon the reader? (ie. What do these design features add to the meaning of the text?)

4. The author, Margaret Wild, has dealt with several issues and themes throughout this book. What relevance do these issues have for you?

Please make sure that you send your replies to book_week_rap@list.schools.nsw.edu.au

bye for now,
Alyson Simpson
