Yo, fellow rappers!
1a. We think that this story is set in Australia.
The clues in the illustrations were:
1) the dog seemed to be a dingo,
2) the background looked like Australian bushland and outback, especially
the red desert,
3) the magpie is of the sort only found in Australia
The clues in the vocabulary were:
1) coolibah, stringybark and yellow box trees,
2) fox was an outsider and in Australia foxes are an introduced species and
the magpie, a native species, was scared of him.
1b. The scratchy childlike writing fits in with the rugged background of the
Australian bush and looks like it has been pasted on from the first draft.
The text blends in with the illustrations to become part of the setting.
The scratched effect used in the illustrations brings out the feelings of
isolation and desolation.
1c. Jealousy: Fox is jealous of magpie and dog's relationship, so tries to
split them up because he knows he can't have what they do.
Encouragement: Dog encourages magpie to believe that life is still good and
they can help each other.
Loyalty and Fickleness: Magpie left her friend, the dog, to go with the fox
because he could run faster, but after he left her in the desert she
regretted the way she had betrayed dog.
