Hi Rappers,
At Annandale North Public School we have 6 reading groups and each group is working on one of the picture books. We discussed our tokens for our book and each person painted their token onto a small rock. Our librarian thought of the idea because of the Book Week theme: “Reading Rocks”. Then each group voted on the best description from their group and this is what we came up with.
“Are We There Yet?”
The token I painted is a map of Australia. It represents the map that the family’s grandparents hung on their wall to trace the family’s journey. The brown colour I painted it, represents the dryness and the climate of Australia. A lot of the landmarks the family visited, were only spectacular for these reasons, like: Uluru, the colours of Australia, the desert and wildlife.

“Mutt Dog”
I chose as my token a bathiutub with black bubbles, a white base and it’s standing on legs.
The colours represent certain attitudes. The black bubbles are to show that Mutt Dog is very dirty and he’s just off the street. The white base shows that he is in a clean house and he has a home. The legs represent that he is strong.
In the book the tub is set in a homely bathroom. That shows that he has a kind family. It happens at the end of the story when he gets his first bath.
The people/animal in the bathroom are the mum, dad, and two kids, oh, and Mutt Dog (otherwise known as family).

“Belonging”:
For my token I chose an Aboriginal flag because Sorry Day is in the book. The story setting is in a city like Annandale. The token is shown on page 7 when Tracy was 12 years old. The people were: Tracy and the local community. I think that all ages will understand my token.

“Refugees”:
My token is the frog from the swamp. When the swamp was destroyed the frog had to hop away to find a new swamp so the frog was a refugee like the ducks.
The ducks and the frog were smart to try and find a new home because if they stayed, they could have been killed by the heavy bulldozers or have died from starvation.
Younger children would probably think that the frog was just for decoration and would not know that the frog was also a refugee because his and the ducks’ home was destroyed together.

“At the Beach”:
My token is the glasses. I chose the glasses because when the family peers in to Grandma’s glasses to say goodbye. That is where the adventure began.
Grandma’s glasses are small black bits with thin black rings around them. Grandma’s glasses are quite unusual. (I chose them because that is where the adventure began.)
The characters in that moment were Grandma, a short fat, neat character, Dad a thin goofy looking character, Mum a tall thin character, Raja a naughty dog, the three children Penny, Frankie and Henry and Pierre the family’s beloved car.

“Lizzie Nonsense”:
My token was a horseshoe a horseshoe looks like a crescent moon. This came from when Lizzie’s father came back from selling sandalwood in his horse and carriage. The horseshoe came from Bessie the horse.
This was set in the Australian bush. The characters are Mama and Papa they are adults then there is Lizzie who’s 7or 6 then there is Baby who’s a toddler.
The parents in the book are gazing at each other Baby is staring at us bringing us into the picture Lizzie is staring strait ahead. The colours are reddish brownish and they are watercolours.
