bookweek05_rap rap point 2 from Annandale North Public School

Hi fellow rappers,
We think the best technique for At the Beach is the use and position of objects because the post card is the main object in the story. Also the cyclist loses all of the objects and you have to go back and find them. The objects that the family use and wear sometimes make them look a bit weird. These objects stand out a lot in the story. This is why we think the use and position of objects is the best technique for At the Beach.
My group thinks the illustrator has chosen the use and position of objects because using this technique keeps the story going and does not let it get boring. It draws your eyes to the pictures in the book. Our group also thinks that every one of all ages can read this book as well as understand it.

Hi fellow rappers,
We’re working on the book Lizzie Nonsense. We have chosen two techniques. Our first technique is shown by the objects which are on page 2 for example: The carriage which shows that papa is leaving and also that it was set in the olden days, because we don’t sell sandalwood or ride in wooden carriages anymore.
The colours also aren’t as bright anymore which shows that it is a sad scene.
The second technique is the medium used and we looked at page 6. You can tell the background is water colours because the colours have run into each other making new colours. You can also tell that Mama and Lizzie’s clothes are painted with acrylics.

Are We There Yet?
We chose as our main visual technique non-verbal emotional expressions, because without non-verbal expressions the pictures would mean nothing to the reader. In the book every character has a moment in the story where you can see their emotions through the pictures. Not only writing describes feelings but also illustrations do. The reason we chose non-verbal expressions is because in the text it doesn’t show what everyone says. It is up to the non-verbal expressions to show how the characters feel. The author is writing in one of the character’s views. Therefore the text is bit like a journal.
In lots of the pictures in the newspapers, magazines, books and advertisement there are lots of different examples of non-verbal expressions. Non-verbal expressions can also be shown by hand and body gestures.

Hi fellow Rappers,

We think that how the elements are positioned and how the light is used is important. The illustrations have strong relationships with the text when the family is naming Mutt Dog.

The light is drawn to Mutt Dog wherever he goes. For example on page15 outside it is cold and dark, but inside where Mutt Dog is, it is warm and light. That’s why we think that position and light is very important.

The light is drawn to Mutt Dog and how the elements are positioned make the reader’s eye drawn to Mutt Dog and what he is doing. It makes us feels sorry for Mutt Dog and hopes he finds a home.

Hello Rappers,

We are doing Belongings. We think the main technique is collage. It goes throughout the book. Jeannie Baker is very creative and these are the materials she used: tissue paper, coloured paper, wool, string, felt and cut out ads.

We think that Jeannie Baker chose collage because it shows the 3D affect with the buildings and cars. The window is like looking through Tracy’s eyes.

We have seen collage in other Jeannie Baker books like “Looking Through the Window”`.

Hi fellow rappers,

Our group thinks in Refugees, the most important techniques are direction and light.

Direction: On page 11-12 the light is used to make the ducks stand out. The ducks are outlined in front of the moon.Your eyes are attracted to the light before the darkness around it. The light shows that they are not in their natural habitat because it is pitch black. Where they’re sleeping, at the swamp, it wouldn’t be so dark.

The skateboarder I saw in the newspaper was jumping off 10 steps and a photo was taken beneath him when he was jumping. It makes us feel as though he was jumping out at us and we were underneath him.

Light: On page 11-12 the background is dark and there is a full moon that outlines the ducks resting on the pipes. This changes the mood form happy to unhappy the darkness represents sadness, loneliness and homesickness and this is the beginning of a journey to find a new home. This effect catches the eye.

Lighting has an effect on the mood. Like if a setting is dark and kind of scary you wouldn’t expect kittens having a party would you? Instead you’d expect a monster stalking kids. The kittens having a party would have a setting that is lighter and has brighter colours.
