bookweek05_rap Rap Point 2

Hi fellow rappers
Here are some of our thoughts on Rap point 2

Refugees

The look that the dog displays in Refugees on page 27 is a demanding look, as though the dog wants you to pay attention to him.  Advertisers use this look to capture your attention therefore making you find out about the product.

This demanding look is in the book, ‘The Wonder Thing’ on page four.  The boy is looking at you almost pleading.  The book is written by Libby Haythorn and illustrated by Peter Gouldthorpe.  When illustrators use this demanding look the character’s eyes seem to follow you.  The look is very effective and used especially well in Refugees.

Belonging

We found many techniques in other picture books that were similar to ones Jeannie Baker uses in Belonging. For example in a book called Eloise at Christmastime there is a lot of detail in the pictures, and the background has eye catching items just like in Belonging.

This technique is also used in a painting called “Garden of Paradise” which was painted by the Master of the Upper Rhine. There are also many other books that tell a story without needing the use of words. For example: “A Story for Bear”,  “the Little Match Girl” and “Eloise at Christmastime” as well.  Jeannie Baker uses collage in all her work and as it allows a great deal of detail to be built up, the pictures can show/tell the whole story without text.
