Thank you for your thorough response to Rap Point 2. You have obviously spent alot of time researching the illustrations in these great books, and I particularly liked your explanation of the two different collage effects in Refugees and Belonging. Great work!
I hope other rappers check their mailboxes and read your great Rap Point 2 response right to the end. Your comments explaining how these techniques are used in other contexts would be great for everyone to read.

Dear Rappers, 2a. Jeannie Baker's technique, using the medium, collage is very interesting! Her collage pictures are extremely detailed and a finished book takes about three years. She uses light and shadows to make it realistic and it works.It has a 3-D, real-life effect. She uses natural materials. They are treated, then given a fine spray of oil paint for colour. Perspective is gained with the objects being rounded at the front. The human characters are made as lifelike as possible. The human story is emphasised by the objects on the windowsill. In the environmental theme of the story a lot of improvements occur, such as the local residents wanting to renew the local, native vegetation. Also the reader can notice the improvements in air qualityand people trying to regenerate the visual environment by taking down the
advertising signs. 2b. Collage as a medium is used in "Refugees" as well, but in this book the shapes are big and bold so the reader can easily understand the devastation of the ducks home and the dangers in finding a new home. The simple shapes used bring a quick realization of the difficult situation the ducks are in and the reader has great sympathy for them. In advertisements, in magazines, the collages are simple in shape so the audience can quickly get the message, usually with a sense of humour. For example, "Bob the Builder" in New Idea; "5 Serves of Vegies and 2 Serves of Fruit" a community health message; "Bag of Bones" an ad. for twisties. We looked at websites where artists displayed their collage pictures. We were challenged to understand why the artist had arranged the collage in a particular way and what it really meant!
