bookwk04_rap Keep the good work coming!

Dear Rappers,

I have really enjoyed reading the messages we have received this week. A special welcome to the rappers at Parramatta East, Abbotsford and Mullum Primary schools,  who have just joined us. We look forward to reading your next rap messages, as you send them in.

Some of your responses to Rap Point 1 have been truly creative!  Obviously many of you have watched the antics of real animals and used this, the book and your imagination, to construct your final piece. Great work. Its been fun viewing the world through animals’ eyes and imagining how life might be for these animal characters.  I think we have heard from an animal in every one of the six books in this Picture Book section, if my calculations are correct.  Have I got that right?

Several rappers have asked us to guess the animal who is describing their day.  Have you been able to recognise these mystery characters? If so, email the senders with your answer.  If you asked rappers to guess, please let us all know the first rappers to correctly identify your animal by sending a message to:

This week we need to continue our work on Rap Point 2, which asks us to study the illustrations and describe how they open doors for us.  Rap Point 2 asks:

Select a series of pages from the 2004 short-listed Picture Book of the Year that you know best.

First, study the illustrations carefully and then describe the techniques the illustrator has used that make this such an effective picture book. Explain how some of the choices made by the illustrator position the reader in a certain way and how these might influence readers' understanding of the text. (Rap sheet 6 has some points to consider). Justify your response with examples from the text.

Secondly, how do these illustrations (and others in the book) open doorways for the reader and take us beyond the words? (Rap sheet 7 offers some pointers).

This is quite a challenging rap point, so I understand that it takes time to develop a response you are proud of.  We will delay our next rap point to give you more time to work on Rap Point 2 above.

Send your messages for all student rappers to:

We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Happy rapping,

Mrs Chapman
