Dear rappers,
Rap point 2 was a really interesting activity for our class and also quite a challenge. We have closely examined the illustrations and wrote down all our thoughts about why they were so effective, what emotions they created and how they opened doorways for us.
Warm colours were used when Reggie sat on her cane bed in Doug and Helen's study room, to show the warm temperature at night time inside their welcoming house and the candle lights looked extra effective because of the background colours. The techniques the illustrator used was mainly just blurred shapes for effectness instead of fine detail and a lot of the pictures were a combination of different colours. There wasn't much sketching and most of the pictures looked like they were done with paint and crayon.
Looking at that picture, we got a cosy, comfortable, relaxing and quiet feeling. The fire also caused a warm feeling inside us.
But when Reggie was alone in the dark street at night time, the background was all a greyish-blue colour, showing the loneliness and depression Reggie was feeling at that moment.
Unlike some books, this one can open doorways for readers and take them into the story, showing them standing right next to the characters and feel exactly what the characters are feeling. Looking at the pictures adds more detail to the readers thoughts and makes it more intresting for them. Stepping into the page where Reggie is alone on the hill top creates feelings of lonliness and shows how much Reggie really wants her old home. In the quote 'it looked very far away', shows how far away the city is but looking at the picture, you can tell the house was actually a lot more further away.
We can't wait to do rap point 3 and our teacher is having us do a lot of work on this activity. We are plotting down all the schools that are doing this activity on a map in Australia. But right now we are having a bit of trouble finding out where Empire Bay P.S is located.
Do anyone of you know where Alexander Graham Bell first tested the telephone? If you do, please let us know.
Happy rapping,
From Jenny and Stefani, SPJ, Carlton South Public School
