Rap point 2 – Illustrator’s Techniques to Create an Effective Picture Book.
Title: Reggie Illustrator: Andrew Mclean
We found this Rap Point challenging so we worked in small groups and then put some of our ideas together.
Our rap point is about pages ‘4 & 5’ and pages ‘12 & 13’ of Reggie.
In pages 4 and 5 the colours are very warm. They are red, gold, yellow, orange and brown. This cosy scene makes us feel warm and happy, just like the characters that are all smiling. Helen and Doug feel comfortable reading their book and Reggie loves watching them as she sits on the beanbag. The lighting is low and soft which makes the whole picture look ‘homely’.
On pages 12 & 13 the illustrator has used mainly cool, dark colours like blue, green and black, which help to show that Reggie is feeling sad. Also, she is staring longingly towards the city wishing she were back in her old home.
The next technique is the size of the main characters. In the ‘warm’ pages Reggie, Doug & Helen are their normal size because the illustrator is showing that things are just right, i.e. everything is perfect in this scene.
In the ‘cool’ pages Reggie is quite small because she feels ‘small’ and lonely because she is missing her old home.
Andrew McLean used watercolour paints and crayons to make both pictures. In the ‘warm’ pages the background is blurred and smudged to help us to concentrate on the main characters. In the ‘cool’ pages the city background is clear because that’s where Reggie wants to be.
The illustrator helps us to enter Reggie’s world and the pictures show us how the characters feel.
