Here is a media release (5 August 2002) from the NSWIS on Jim Piper (Swimming). Interesting information to include in his character profile......

NSWIS rising star Jim Piper (Ingleburn) has put a difficult week of competition behind him to win two gold medals on the final night of swimming action at the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

The 20-year-old finished out of the medals in the 50m and 100m breaststroke events earlier this week but hit back to win his first gold over the 200m distance.

"I wasn't very happy after the 100m breaststroke, and the time in this wasn't that great, but it was good enough to get a medal, and that's good enough. It's what I've been training for," said the newly crowned Commonwealth Champion.

Piper's time of 2:13:10 was just 0.24 of a second faster than the second placed South African Terence Parkin with Canada's Michael Brown finishing third.

Piper's second gold strike came as a member of the men's 4x100m medley team, which included fellow NSWIS scholarship holder Ian Thorpe.

The team led from start to finish with Thorpe powering home to assert Australia's dominance in 3:36:05. The victory gave Thorpe (Australia's flag bearer at the closing ceremony), his sixth gold medal of the Games, and his seventh medal from seven attempts.
