commonwealthgames_rap Responses from Bronwyn Eagles

Responses from Bronwyn Eagles - Bronze Medallist, Hammerthrow.....

1. How did you feel after winning the Silver Medal?

I was very happy to win the silver medal. The gold would have been fantastic, but it was not meant to be on the day. I was also very glad to see Karyne win the bronze, which is an improvement on her 4th place from four years ago, and Lorraine who won, has had a very difficult year. I love to see and compete against people who always want to improve.

2. What other achievements have you had in your career?

My best achievement would have to be the Bronze medal that I won at the World Champs last year. It was unexpected and so exciting. Other achievements include World Junior Finalist, 1998, I have held all Australian Records from under 16 to Open (this year the under 18 record was broken), Australian Champion 2000, 2001 and 2002, Commonwealth Record holder, Athletics Australia Female Athlete of the year 2001 and 2002

3. What will be a lasting memory for you from The Games?

My lasting memory of the games will not only be the rain or the competition, but the people who made the games. The athletes and volunteers who were all so friendly. Although the weather wasn't that great, everyone walked with a smile on their face.

4. What was the Closing Ceremony like?

The closing ceremony was very wet. Like the rest of the athletes, I sat in the rain for some time, watching. However, I left not long before the athletes were able to get on the field. It was very wet and cold, and I was still in training for my next competition and couldn't afford to get sick.

5. Have you arrived home as yet? What are your future plans/goals?

I arrived home on the charter flight with a lot of other athletes and attended the welcome home celebrations in Melbourne.

I started back training while we were still in Manchester. In 5 weeks time I am leaving again for World Cup which is Madrid, Spain. After that competition, I will be having a holiday for 3 weeks away from athletics, so I'll be fresh for next season.

6. If you weren't participating in athletics - what sport would you be playing? Why?

If I wasn't doing athletics I honestly don't think that I would be playing any other sport, and I can't see myself doing any other sport. That's only because I have been throwing for most of my life. It has become as natural as gong to school everyday

7. Do you still suffer from ear infections?

If I spend too much time in the pool, I still get ear infections. I'm lucky that I don't spend that much time in the pool anymore.

8. How many hours each day do you train?

Training consists of nine sessions a week, varying between 1.5 to 2.5 hours. It just depends on what I have to do during the session. I always throw, which takes about 1 hour. Weights in a session means that it takes longer, but I love those sessions

9. Do you have any tips for us for ensuring the Hammer doesn't go crashing into the nets?

There is no way to ensure that the hammer will not go into the net. Everybody does it, it just depends on how your technique is on the day, the speed of the circle and how you control it

10. Who are your role models? Why?

My mum is my biggest role model. She has had the biggest influence on my life and my athletic career. She is absolutely amazing and incredibly supportive. She has 8 children and supports the lot of us, makes time for us all and knows exactly what to say when things are not going as we may have planned. Mums are like that.
