Hey its us... The hottie and this is what we think about 'who is afraid of the big bad book"!
Our favourite story was Cinderella. The colours and patterns were bright and different! We liked the way they twisted the story by adding telephones glasses and moustaches on to the characters like the way a real child would draw in their book. Humour was a great part of this page and it was interesting how they were all waiting for the prince who had been pasted on a card that Herb had made. Cinderella was also waiting for her fairy god mother who was stuck: this was a cleaver domino affect or chain reaction.
This book is written differently to the stereotype fairy tale. One of the changes is a few of the characters have changed their personality for example the fairy god mother is a lot nastier, self absorbed, rude and she was more clumsy this was shown by her getting stuck on the chandelier!
Another character was goldilocks and her being rude, loud and screaming a lot plus the poor nice three bears having to put with her coming and going when ever she wants.
Our group liked the way that the illustrator used photos and drawings together to create the pictures. This gave the impression that Herb had deliberately cut out photos from magazines and had pasted them in the book. The illustrator also made it look like Herb had drawn moustaches on some of the characters. Then where herb had ‘cut a hole to the next page’ there was a real hole and that made it fun. The writing expressed the way that the characters spoke.
Eg: “He wouldn’t look twice at you” Snapped the skinny one. “Oh do be quiet” hissed the stepmother.
The writing showed the ‘skinny one’ being snappy and the stepmother ‘being sly and cunning’.
The illustrator also uses the words to create a picture…
Eg: she has the words as stairs and Herb is climbing them.
Its like a shake poem.
As in every fairy tale we think this has a moral and we think this is “When you do something bad to someone else, they might get you back, how and when you don’t know.” We think this because you see what Herb did to the book when he was little, so when he goes into the book, the book and characters get him back!
