Hello rappers!!!
Here are our responses to 'Shrek'. We split up into 4 groups and wrote a paragraph each. We have really enjoyed reading everybody's emails so far.
1. How have traditional fairytales been subverted?
The movie 'Shrek' is an excellent parody of a traditional fairytale. In classic fairytale stories, you hear peaceful and quiet music and in 'Shrek' they've used an intro with rock music.
The animated character of Shrek is very different and unexpected. He is an ogre - big, ugly, green, filthy, rude and obnoxious.
Instead of Prince Charming living in a castle, Shrek is living in a swamp eating eyeballs and using ear-wax for candles. He's the complete opposite of a hero - our favourite anti-hero! (written by Shiloh)
2. Describe Shrek's appearance.
Shrek's overall physical appearance is disgusting. He has brown teeth, big tubular ears, green skin, stubby fingers and is just plain ugly.
Shrek has a loud, Scottish accent. It isn't the normal accent that would be in a fairytale. His actions are what we expect from an ogre: he farts, burps, showers in the mud and loves picking wedgies! (written by Brett)
3. Describe some of the 'Film Techniques'.
When we started to view the opening of 'Shrek', we discovered that his home is a hideous swamp which is very unexpected. The music was calm and gentle at first until we get our first view of Shrek sitting on the grubby toilet. The music suddenly changes to modern rock which is a shock for the audience.
Some of the camera angles at the start include a close up shot of his teeth and a birds eye view of the fairytale book. The animation is very effective and you almost forget that it's not real!
We were enthralled from the first scene and we couldn't wait to see more! (written by Aisha)
4. What is the reaction of the audience?
Our class's reaction to the opening sequence of Shrek was that we found it was very humorous, interesting and original. Our favourite part was right at the beginning when he was reading the fairytale and he ripped the page out to wipe his bottom. We thought it was funny because it was different and not many fairytale characters would act in that manner. (written by Carla)
