fairytales05_rap willoughby rap point two

Hey rappers,

We are the Willoughby wonder women!

Q1 How are our expectations of this film as a traditional fairytale challenged at the very start of the film?

The first thing we see is a beautiful golden light shining on a book with the verage fairytale: beautiful princess, tall tower, evil dragon. There is beautiful music. This makes the veiwer believe that "Shrek" will be the average fairytale. Then we are introduced to Shrek, who is large, dirty, foul, unattractive and has awful habits, though is harmless unlike the average fairytale ogre. The music changes to modern rock, with lyrics describing lone behaviour. This changes how we think the story will be: from light, airy and average fairytale material, to to an uncouth fractured fairytale. We see Shrek having a shower, brushing his teeth and eating with cutlery, yet he washes not wih water but with mud. He brushes his teeth, not with toothpaste but with caterpillar guts. He eats with spoons, but he is eating eyeballs. He is civilized - like our ordinary hero - but gross - like our ordinary villian - a! very fractured fairytale. Its ironic that someone like this later becomes this hero. This is also challenging the idea that every problem has a perfect solution. It also makes the viewer think twice about who is really the perfect match for you and how you judge the person. It is also evident that the film is not stereotypical in the sense that they protrayed all the elements of the original fairytale hero, but in Shrek's unethical, quirky way. For example, Shrek's mannerisms and his toilet humour.

Q2 How are film techniques used to challenge the traditional representation of a hero?

He challenges the traditional fairytale hero as he is  ugly, fat, hairy, green and is an ogre, whereas a normal hero is tall, handsome, and is usually human. Some diegetic sounds in the first scene include: farting, splashing, toilet flushing, burping, gurgling, slushing, mirror breaking, bubbling, slopping mud and groaning.
Camera angles in the movie are used to point out and emphasize Shrek's gross habits and disgusting, uncouth appearance. The close ups include:
-Him brushing his rotting teeth
-His ghastly backside when in the mud shower
-Him cleaning out the log
-His swamp home
These close-ups are revolting but entertaing at the same time. Another camera technique is juxtaposition. This technique shows the different personalities between the villagers and Shrek. The scene is when there is a close up of the villagers picking up their pitchforks and Shrek picking up his spoon. This shows that Shrek is not harmful and the villagers are, which is the reverse of what we expect.

Q3 How is the audience positioned to respond to Shrek through humour?

Because Shrek is funny we like him. His jokes make us laugh with him, not at him, unlike Lord Farquad.

We enjoyed the scene because it was challenging and entertaining.
