RAP POINT 2
Hello this is Sean and Nick from Parramatta High School. This is our response to rap point two.
The establishing sequence of “Shrek” challenges our expectations of what we expect in a traditional fairytale in a number of ways. The first example of this is when he is in the toilet and reading the fairytale. At the end he laughs and says “like that will ever happen” and rips out the page and uses it as toilet paper.
Our expectations of this film being a traditional is challenged by many features at the start of the film. For example the very first time we see Shrek is when he has just come out of the toilet, how many fairytales do you know that first portrait there “heroes” as coming out of the toilet? Also when Shrek has a shower he does the exact opposite of what we would do, he pours mud over himself. When he goes for a swim in his pond he farts and kills a few fish. Not a very heroic thing to do is it? The mise-en-scene in these frames show us all of the terrible things he does for a living. For example eating eyeballs, using slugs for toothpaste and mud for a shower. This show us the way Shrek acts and how he lives his life. He doesn’t care about anything except for himself and his swamp. There is also many non-diegetic and diegetic sounds in the movie. An example of diegetic sound is when Shrek comes out of
the toilet and we hear the toilet flush and also when he’s cleaning he teeth and the mirror breaks. An example of diegetic sounds is when he is reading the fairytale and it has the classical music in the background.
As an audience we are positioned to respond to Shrek in a positive way through humour. This can be seen in the scene where the villagers came to kill him, but then he secretly walks behind them. When they want to move in and kill him, then he laughs and talks all about the different things ogres can do. He then screams and the villagers scream as well. Then he stops and tells them “This is the part where you run away”, and then they run away. He pretends to be scary towards them, but in real life he is a caring person. Another scene where there’s humour is when he’s taking a bath, then farts and the fish rises up from the surface and is dead.
