fairytales05_rap Aman 's rap point 2

      Rap Point 2

Hi this is Aman from Parramatta High School. This is my response to rap point 2.

The establishing sequence of “Shrek” challenges our expectations of what we expect in a traditional fairytale in number of ways. The first example of this is when a traditional fairytale page was used as toilet paper.

Unlike the traditional fairytales the hero of the story is a green, big, ugly ogre, who lived alone in a swamp rather than a castle. The voice was played by Mike Myers (who uses a scottish accent). The light which was on the home of Shrek represents that although he was an ogre he had a gentle side. The music along with the mise-en-scene of these frames suggests that Shrek’s home was heaven for him. Another way in which our expectations were challenged was the way the villagers were scared of him. A mid shot was used when Shrek was scaring the villagers out of their lives. The voice of donkey was played by Eddie Murphy who simply steals the movie from his voice.

Another way in which the film subverts our notion of traditional fairytales and the representation of the hero is the use of song to introduce Shrek which was non-diagetic. This has the effect of making the movie impressive from the beginning. Their were also diagetic sounds like the sound of flush, breaking of the mirror etc.

As an audience we are positioned to respond to Shrek in a positive way through humour. Although in the movie the greatest change was when their were characters of traditional fairytale in it yet the overall movie was just fantastic.

Thanks for reading.
