fairytales05_rap TG and EJ's Rap Response

RESPONSE TO RAP POINT TWO

“SHREK”

Hello this is EJ and TG from 8Eng1 at Parramatta High School. This is our response to Rap point two.

The establishing sequence of “Shrek” challenges our expectations of what we expect in a traditional fairytale in a number of ways. The first example of this is when Shrek is reading the fairytale then ripping out a page and using it as toilet paper.

By portraying Shrek in this way the composer makes us laugh and instead of the traditional fairytale with the handsome Prince and the lovely Princess the composer has led us in a different direction to an ugly ogre…

Another way in which the film subverts our notion of traditional fairytales and the representation of the hero is the use of the soundtrack. For example, the song in the first scene ‘All Stars’ by SmashMouth which is non-diegetic. A line of the song is “Somebody once told me the world is gonna roll me, I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed”. This suggests that Shrek is not bright and not a hero. Instead of the normal handsome and mannered Prince Charming, the hero is non-social, ugly, fat, green, non human Shrek.

Thank you for reading our response we hope you enjoyed it and that it will provide you information that you don’t already have. Many thanks…
