fairytales05_rap Rap 2 Shrek

Hi Rappers,
This is an analysis of the first couple of scenes from the film Shrek. Shrek is a green ogre who doesn't like having company. Shrek rejects company because most 'people' dislike ogres. Shrek is unlike any other fairytale hero you may have seen. He doesn't have good hygiene habits and lives in a dirty swamp.

There are many cases of irony or in the film, which subverts the fairytale formula. The film begins with a typical narration spoken by a classically trained 'story teller voice' in the third person. The background music is also classical, suggesting a traditional fairytale is about to be told.

In the opening scene a green hand(Shrek) rips out the pages from the fairy book. This suggests that the rules for a traditional fairytale have been broken. It is further highlighted through the change in music styles. The classical music is replaced by popular music.

The language and tone of voice also acts as a way to change our expectations of a fairytale. The pigs humorously state "He huffed and he puffed and he signed an eviction notice".

The greatest irony in the movie is that a fat, green ogre turns out to be the hero, who hooks in with a hot princess, that also turns out to be an ogre as well. They do make some funny jokes in the movie which makes it fun to watch. "Go Donkey"
