How our expectations of this film as a traditional fairytale are challenged at the very start of the film. We thought that it would be a boring little fairytale. But we got an ugly green ogre with an old house, stinky breath, brown teeth, green body, and brownie green swamp.
The dunny was along drop but it flushed which was a funny sound effect. The music which started out romantic changed to rock music which was very surprising.
He was an ugly green ogre who lived in a swamp, not a young man who lived in palace, and instead of a noble steed he got a fast talking donkey.
Shrek is not what we expected as a hero. He is green, fat, ugly and disgusting,
But Shrek was still a hero.
