fairytales05_rap Ahmad and Risheek RAP POINT 2

                                                Rap point 2

                                         ‘Shrek’

Hello this is Risheek kaul and Ahmad yosufi from Parramatta high school. Here is our response to rap point 2.

Our expectations of Shrek were challenged of what we expected in a traditional fairytale in many ways. Some examples are when we see his appearance and where he lives and where he uses the pages of the fairytale book as toilet paper.

The composer by portraying Shrek in this way makes us think that Shrek is a green fat, huge and funny ogre who scares people and after scaring them gives them a chance to run away which shows that he doesn’t want to harm others. Shreks house was in a swamp which symbolised danger. And that certainly isn’t a place for the hero to stay. The villagers come to capture or take him somewhere but run away when he scares them.

Another way in which the film subverts our notion of fairytales and the representation of the hero is the use of non-diegetic sound. In the movie they play the song ‘you are an all star’ instead of fairytale music. They also used diegetic sound in places where he farted. They have used close ups and extreme close ups for camera angles when shrek was scaring some one. This has the effect of showing us that he is an ogre rather than a charming prince,

As an audience we are positioned to respond to Shrek in a positive way through humour. This can be seen in the visual humour like where he farts and scratches his behind and this is not the way a hero acts. It can also be seen in verbal humour and irony. Examples of verbal humour and irony are when he tells to the villagers “this is the part where you run away”. This is not the way a traditional fairy tales ogre acts.
