Rap point 2
“SHREK”
Hi there this is Charles and Abu from Parramatta high school’s 8english 1 .this is our response to rap point 2 on the film “shrek”.
Our expectations of this as a traditional fairytale were challenged in many ways. we were expecting a good old fashioned fairytale at the start, but obviously we were proved wrong when shrek ripped out a page of the fairytale book and used it to wipe his bottom and quoted “like that’s ever gonna happen”.
The composer of” shrek “has portrayed shrek as the contrast of prince charming. Normally prince is clean, charming, rich and handsome. But shrek is totally the opposite of prince charming because he’s fat, ugly, ugly, poor, disgusting and he is a green mean ogre. Shrek lives in a swamp on his own. To shrek this swamp is heaven on earth but to us normal human civilised people it’s not the best place to live.
Another way in which the film subverts our notion of traditional fairytales and representation of the hero is the use of filmic techniques such as, mise en scene, diegitic and non diegitic sounds, and various camera angles/shot which show that shrek is not your typical fairytale hero for example: When shrek farts and burps that’s diegetic sounds. Also when shrek roars at the villagers in the beginning they went close up angle to give it a bit more scare factor. Another filmic technique is the part when they put “All-star” which goes with the scene but is non-diegetic. Further on in the film Lord Faarquad is made to look tall with a bottom camera shot.
As an audience we are positioned to respond to shrek in a positive way through humour. This can be seen in scenes like when donkey begins to fly and teases the guards but ends up falling. Another humoured scene is when gingerbread man is being investigated by Lord Faarquad and his guards and he talks about “the muffin man”.
That was abu and charles’ rap point 2 we hope to have responses from readers as soon as possible.
