When you are responding to Shrek it is very important that you revisit the filmic terms so that you are using the metalanguage to discuss the meaning conveyed by the film. Consider how the viewer is positioned to believe that this will be a traditional fairy tale because of the close up of the picture book and the non-diegetic melodious music. Then our expectations are disrupted by what happens next....
