Bonnyrigg High 8M:

The Intruder

The group's favourite representation of a fairytale was Goldilocks on the last page. The drama queen Goldilocks is locked out of the Three Bears cottage, by Herb drawing a padlock on the door and a wig on her head. Goldilocks˘ hair is now 'Brownilocks'.

Child has changed the fairytale once again; the desperation of Goldilocks is humorous, because she is an obnoxious character. Goldilocks ironically, has accused Herb of being an intruder, when in her tale; she is the intruder who breaks things and uses things without permission.

Goldilocks has been humbled and has been taught a lesson by Herb. She frustrated his efforts to escape, which is very different in the original tale. It appears that nothing can frighten this 'cross, little girl.'

The visual features used to represent Goldilocks are: that she is composed of 'real' objects, for example, her hair has been cut from a photograph of hair and her chequered dress has been cut from a photograph of real cloth. Her expression doesn't change; she is either shouting or angry. Her dialogue is always in BOLD font, it circles and is crooked to emphasise shouting.

On one page, she is so huge that she dominates the whole page and she is captured from a low angle, which suggests she is intimidating. She constantly has her nose up, which suggests arrogance. Her gaze and the horizontal vector are directly towards other characters, demanding a response and reinforcing the idea she is very bossy.

Child mocks arrogance and punishes Goldilocks. She has through the character of Herb, created a consequence for Goldilocks that is greater than being frightened by bears. Child has subverted this character; by showing the responder is really in control.
