Hi Teg and Avi,
Great to get your questions. How are
you enjoying the book rap?
I'll do my best with the answers.
Here we go.
1. Well, your number one question is
the hardest, of course. It's very hared to choose the favourite book I've
written. It's a bit like having children. Each one is unique, with
their own position in the family. I'm going to put this one back on
you. Which one do you like the best?
2. Nancy is a little bit like a mixture of me
and my daughter. There are lots of details that come from a mix of both
our lives and then some extra bits added in that come through the
imagination. I suppose I was interested in how she went about finding out
about storytelling and herself, what is special to her, and what is the same as
others. Through her I was interested in how Aboriginal culture and my
culture can come together in moments that enhance each other's experience.
3. Flytrap almost in the same way
that is the start of the book. I picked up my daughter from school.
She was in about grade 2 or 3 and she was in a real tizz because she didn't
have a Venus Flytrap. I tried to get her out of her thunderous mood by
making up silly excuses...and so the book started.
4. I went along one day to see Boori
perform for a group of school students. He totally captivated my
imagination with the way he told stories and spoke about his experience as an
Aboriginal person. He made me laugh and cry at the same time and straight
away after the performance I went and asked him if he was interested in writing
a book. He said no, he was too busy. I persisted and said I would
help, we could write together. Finally, he said yes, and we began on our
first book MAYBE TOMORROW.
- We did
have a flytrap but it died!
Enjoy the rap
