In pairs we were given a Commonwealth Games Sport to be researched. Each group searched and found out many interesting facts. We shared our information and then we voted for our favourite sport. 5R’s favourite sport was Gymnastics.
Here is our profile on Gymnastics. There are two types of Gymnastics. There is Rhythmic and Artistic.
History
Artistic
·1st started 2000 years ago by Greek Soldiers.
·1881 international Gymnastics Federation formed.
·Gymnastics was 1st held in the Olympics in 1896 and didn’t debut in the Commonwealth Games until 1978.
Rhythmic
Began in 1940’s in the Soviet Union.
1st held in Olympics Games 1984 and debuted in Commonwealth Games in 1990.

Equipment
Artistic Gymnastics
·Men – floor, vault, horizontal bars, rings, pommel horse and the parallel bars
·Women – floor, vault, uneven bars, balance beam
Rhythmic Gymnastics
Performers use a ball, hoop, clubs, ribbons and rope.
Competitors wear special clothing, use magnesia and hand guards to help enhance their grip on apparatus.

Gymnastics is a spectacular sport where athletes are small and extremely muscular. They train very hard.
They use trampolines help perfect routines.
They are usually a lot of accidents and falls in competitions
An Australian girl won all 5 individual events in Rhythmic gymnastics in the 1994 games. Her name was Kasumi Takahasi
To gain a perfect 10 in your routine you must have performed an exceptional routine as it is extremely rare. The 1st person to score a perfect 10 was Romanian gymnasts Nadia Comaneci. She was only 4feet 11inches and weighed 86pounds. She was 14yrs old. Wow what a star!!!
Well there it is sounds like gymnastics is a really tough sport. We have had lots of star performers at these games.
