indijreaders04_rap Introducing Helen Empacher

AN INTRODUCTION RE: MYSELF

Hello Rappers!

My family name is Mumbulla and my family originates from the south coast, near Bodalla/Wallaga Lake. My tribe is called the Yuin tribe and we have spent many years trying to rebuild the tribe after being separated and divided. I grew up in Sydney with my 2 sisters and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Early on in my life I decided to become a teacher because I could see that education made a BIG difference to children like myself. I have taught at 2 schools in Sydney and many schools in England, where I lived for 2 years. That is also where I met my husband. We now live back in Sydney and have 2 beautiful children. I was pregnant with my second son when I wrote the book.

I wrote the book because I wanted to teach people that Aborigines have a tribal way of doing things and a modern way. The page about where we get our food from is my favourite page too! Many children that I have taught thought that I caught my food with a boomerang when I told them that I was aboriginal. Imagine their surprise when I said that I shopped at the local supermarket just like they did! I wanted to teach them and others that Aborigines are just normal people trying to do the best job that we can do living in the city with everyone else.

Anyway, I hope that you get to enjoy all the other books that go with the series but I am especially glad to hear from you about mine. Happy Reading!

From Helen
