Dear friends and family,
Urgent - PLEASE SEND THIS OUT TO YOUR NETWORKS
Many of you will be holidays now. I write from Kalimantan where the news is all on
the quakes and resulting Tsunamis that hit a number of countries in our region
including
Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India. At present, over 55,000 people have been
killed. There is a whole region in the West of Aceh (Sumatra) where around 1 million

live where contact was only just this afternoon established. News reports are saying
that a possible 21,000 people have been killed in this area alone, which was
closest
to the epicentre of the quake, then hit with the massive Tsunamis. Over 27,000
people have died in Indonesia alone.
People in the activist community here and their family members have been killed by
the Tsunamis in Aceh including the director of Walhi Aceh. Reports continue to
stream
in bearing bad news about our missing frineds and family members. In Indonesia,
relief efforts are being coordinated by a number of competant NGOs. For those of you

I really hope you can spread this email to many people and mail lists who can
support this effort, both within Greenpeace and beyond. This is the worst ever
tragedy to hit
the people of Aceh, who have already suffered for decades under the repressive
military regimes of Suharto and Megawati. More than 13,000 lives have been lost
since
military operations began in the province. This tragedy tops all previous suffering
yours in peace
