PRESS RELEASE
No.: 101/PR/PEN/XII/2004
INDONESIA TSUNAMI RELIEF FUND
On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude and sincere appreciation to the Government and People of Australia for the outpouring of concern, sympathy and assistance in relation to the tragic disaster on Sumatra Island, particularly in the provinces of Aceh, North Sumatra and nearby islands.
To support the relief operations, we encourage people to donate money that could also be channelled through the "Indonesia Tsunami Relief Fund" especially opened by the Indonesian Embassy in Canberra, at Commonwealth Bank of Australia account no. 062900 10405448.
We appreciate greatly the generosity of people who would like to send clothing, medicines and relief goods. But experience has shown that it is difficult to channel these goods to the victims within a short period of time. However, people wishing to donate such items should channel the donation through the relevant Australian NGO's or directly to: National Crisis Centre (Bakornas PBP) at Jalan Ir.H. Juanda no.36, Jakarta Pusat, 10110 (tel. +6221 345 8400) and the Disaster Relief Working Group of the Indonesian Department of Foreign Affairs, Departmen Luar Negeri RI, Main Building 7th floor, Jalan Taman Pejambon no.6, Jakarta 10110 (tel. +6221 3846633).
To honour the victims of the disaster, the Indonesian Embassy in Canberra will organize a "Memorial Night" on Monday, 3 January 2005 at 7.00 pm at the Balai Kartini, Indonesian Embassy, 8 Darwin Av., Yarralumla, ACT 2600. The Indonesian community in Canberra as well as friends of Indonesia are cordially invited to attend. The program will consist of an interfaith prayer ceremony and followed by a fund raising event.
The Indonesian Embassy in Canberra will constantly update its website at http://www.kbri-canberra.org.au with the latest information regarding the relief efforts underway in Sumatra.
