Subject: Losses in Sumatra

Hi Leonie and Kratai,

I thought you might like to pass on the sad details about education in North Sumatra and hopefully students and teachers that you can contact may be willing to do some fundraising for the victims.

The most recent statistics recorded by the National Department of Education in Indonesia show that more than 1,000 teachers are listed as missing so far. Authorities are not sure yet how many thousands of school students were killed in the tsunami. However, it is estimated that about 25,000 school students could have been killed in the disaster. There were 914 primary schools, 155 junior high schools, 67 senior high schools and 15 vocational educational institutions destroyed in the tsunami. About 50% of schools were destroyed.

At his stage with about 50% of the school buildings still usable, the Indonesian Government will set up emergency classrooms by installing 2,000 tents. They will also bring 1,000 new teachers into the area. Emergency water supplies and sanitary equipment will be set up at these schools. Obviously it will be some time before students return to their schools, but education authorities are attempting to get the students back into schools as soon as possible. Students will be given counselling before beginning their studies.

Obviously massive funding is needed for rebuilding schools and providing equipment for teachers and students to use and for students to replace clothing and books lost in the disaster. The Embassy of Indonesia in Canberra has set up the "Indonesia Tsunami Relief Fund". Donations to this fund may be deposited in the special Commonwealth Bank of Australia Account set up for the purpose. The account number is 062900 10405448.

Thank you.

John Davenport

Education Officer
