Indonesia Tsunami Appeal’s
contribution focuses on education
The Indonesia tsunami appeal (ITA)
Committee is pleased to announce that it has raised a total of A$ 80.321,75 (as
of 7 February 2005). Ms. Siti Sofia Sudarma, the Committee Coordinator, said
that the fund raised by the committee will be spent on assisting Acehnese
children in rebuilding their future, especially in providing for their
education.
The
response to the Committee's appeal was overwhelming. It has received donations
from other communities in Australia
such as the Lebanese Muslim Association and the Australian Bosnian Community
amounting to A$ 31.000,00. Donations were also received from the Catholic
Indonesian Community, the Centre for Islamic Dakwah and Education, Minang Saiyo
West Sumatran Community, as well as the Cooperation Forum of Indonesian
Churches in Sydney and many other.
Meanwhile, the Premier of
New South Wales Bob Carr, who is also a state Member of Parliament for Maroubra
where the Indonesian Consulate General is located, met representatives of
Maroubra Seals Sports and Community Club and Crown International Holdings Group
on 27 January 2005. During the meeting, Premier Bob Carr once again underlined
that the Australian people have a strong sense of caring and willingness to
help the tsunami victims as much as they can. The two companies are major
sponsors, along with South Sydney Junior Rugby League Club Limited, University of Technology
Sydney and Garuda Indonesia of a corporate gathering to
fundraise for the tsunami appeal, which will be held on 9th February 2005 at
Parliament House.
The support of local
community has been tremendous towards the Indonesia Tsunami Appeal. The
Randwick City Council have supported the ITA – Minang Saiyo fundraising
on January 9 by generously providing the venue at the Randwick Town Hall
and is participating at the ITA Luncheon at the Parliament House as Corporate
sponsor. Further medium and long-term assistance for Aceh are being discussed
between the Randwick Council and the Consul General. Meanwhile the Manly City
Council’s Aid 4 Aceh
program has assisted in providing medicine and water purification equipments to
Aceh.
Indonesia
was the worst nation hit by the tsunami. The death toll has reached more than
200.000 in the provinces of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam and North
Sumatra and it may
take some time before the affected areas will be recovering from the
devastation caused by the earthquake and tsunami.
The committee’s
term of reference is to raise funds and to assist victims of tsunami disaster
in Indonesia;
and will operate for the following three months since it was established on 29
