I have been contacted by a colleague looking for an
Indonesian tutor for her ten-year-old daughter, on Saturday mornings. She lived
in Indonesia
from the age of one until five. She's been worried for several years now that
she can't remember how to speak Indonesian -- bahasa Indonesia, with a
smattering of Javanese and plenty of Jakarta
slang -- was her first language. She was very confused when she first got back
to Australia
-- kids couldn't switch between languages in the playground, so she swiftly
edited the Indonesian out!
