Promotion a book titled 'Indonesia in the Australian
Press' by Ida Palaloi, Sydney foreign correspondent
for GATRA, an Indonesia weekly news magazine

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to inform you that a book titled
'Indonesia in the Australian Press: a case study of
the Soeharto resignation, 21 May 1998' written by Ida
Palaloi has been published. Ida is currently an
Australian based correspondent for GATRA, an
Indonesian weekly news magazine. The book also
provides an insight into her 15 years as a journalist
in both Indonesia and Australia.
The book examines the international media attention
surrounding the change in leadership in Indonesia,
with particular references to the Australian media's
coverage of this event. A compelling read, the book
also examines how foreign news reporting was accepted
by a domestic audience, in this case an Australian
audience, despite the differences between the general
values of Australian journalism and Indonesia's
cultural and political systems.
The May 1998 crisis in Indonesia started with Asia's
economic collapse in July 1997, which resulted in a
social and political crisis in Indonesia that also led
to Soeharto's resignation after 32 years in power. The
events of May 1998 received widespread local and
international coverage. International Newspaper
Editors, including Australians devoted considerable
editorial space and attention to the events, and even
produced special editions to cover the political
historic event. In fact, the Australian media's
in-depth and expansive coverage of the May 1998
crisis could possibly be the most comprehensive
coverage of any international event at that time.
The book is the result of considerable archival
research but also features first-hand accounts of the
media's interest and role in this event through
interviews with three Australian correspondents who
were in Jakarta during the crisis. They include Louise
Williams (the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age),
Patrick Walters (The Australian) and Gregory Earl
(the Australian Financial Review).
Louise Williams has kindly written a foreword for this
book, in which she praises Ida Palaloi's exhaustive
analysis of the Australian media's coverage of the
downfall of President Soeharto in 1998. Louise
Williams writes that it is a very important subject
and concludes that the Australian media operated
professionally, despite the history of tensions. This
is reassuring for the future of the relationship
between the two nations.
The book originated from a thesis as partial
fulfilment of Ida's postgraduate Bachelor of Arts
(Honours) in Asian studies at the University of
Western Sydney. The research component of this book
will contribute to the development of a deeper
understanding of modern Indonesian political history,
with particular reference to the Australian press
coverage of the May 1998 crisis in Indonesia. The book
is available for purchase for $ 15 and $ 10 for
student direct to Ida Palaloi at
palaloisuhadji@yahoo.com.au. The promotion of this
book is proudly supported by the Indonesian Embassy,
Canberra.

Terima kasih.
