lukes_way_of_looking_rap Hi 7 Brown, HWMHS from Matt Ottley

Hi 7 Brown,
Thanks for your e-mail, I'm glad you have enjoyed Luke.

What gave you the idea of using birds as motifs or symbols or metaphors?
I love animals generally, and have always loved birds. For me, because they have the ability to fly, birds (the flighted birds that is) have always been a symbol of freedom and joy. Symbolically, birds are probably recognised by many people as representing freedom. I think you have been spot-on in your response to rap point 2 about what the bird motifs are all about. I wonder if you can see where I have used an ancient cultural icon, which is a kind of natural flow-on, or development of the bird as a symbol of spirit?

What do you think is your most creative piece of work?
If you mean which of the illustrations in 'Luke's Way of Looking', it would have to be the spread where Luke is swinging through the painting. I had such fun doing that painting! I stood a couple of metres back from the paper, and using my hand, a stick and my brushes, I threw or flicked paint at the paper.

Thanks
Matt
