Hi 8 Brown from Hay War Memorial H S
Were you like Luke as a young
boy?
Yes, I was like Luke as a boy. My two big passions
in life were drawing and learning to fly. I was always trying to invent wings,
but none of them ever worked!
Are your books
autobiographical?
Nadia wrote 'Luke's Way of Looking' for me to
illustrate, and although she wasn't writing specifically about me, I suppose I
put allot of my feelings about myself, and my own background into the pictures.
There certainly is an element of autobiography in most of my other books, as
they are all about people who, in one way or another, look at the world
differently. I've only just begun to realise how autobiographical some
of my work is.
What was your other 'fav' book apart from
'Luke's Way of Looking'? My other 'fav' is 'Mrs Millie's Painting', for
all sorts of reasons, one of those being that one of my favourite hobbies is
climbing trees. When I was a young boy in New Guinea, I used to make lots of
cubby houses in the canopies of the rainforest trees growing around our place.
Sometimes the creepers were so thick in the tops of those trees you could almost
walk on them. I always thought that one day I would like to do a book about
someone doing just that.
Do you produce other books apart from picture
books?
Yes, although I haven't for a few years now. I have
illustrated many information books about Australian history and prehistory, and
about wildlife and gardening.
I'm currently working on my first
novel.
Thanks for your questions
Matt
