Hi 5B,
You asked; How important is your use , or
lack , of colour in 'LUKE'S WAY OF LOOKING'?
I chose to begin the book in black and
white with sepia wash because this reflects the very repressive world that
Luke exists in at his school, the world created by Mr Barraclough. When Luke is
walking up to the front steps of the art gallery, you will notice that colour is
coming out through the door and down the steps, almost as if it is coming to
meet him. I believe that creativity is like that. It reminds us that it is
there, but we often get really good at pushing it away. As Luke opens up to his
world of creativity, the world becomes more colourful for him.
From
5B and 5T; How did you and Nadia come to work together? I met Nadia
in Perth a few years ago, during a tour we did there for the Children's Book
Council. We had plenty of talks about all sorts of things, and I was thrilled
when she asked me if I would be interested in doing a collaboration with her.
Had you worked together previously on other books?
No, and I had only ever done one collaboration
before - that was Sailing Home with Colin Thompson
From 5D:
What made you become interested in becoming an artist/
illustrator? It was something I always wanted to do. When I was a boy,
in the Highlands of New Guinea, we couldn't get as many books as children in
other places, so my brothers and I used to write and draw stories for each other
on what ever recycled paper we could get. I think my love of doing these things
came from there.
What was the 1st book you
illustrated?
It was a colouring in book on Australian venomous
wildlife. My first picture book was called Albert's Rainy
Day.
Thanks for your questions
Matt
