Dear rappers
Sorry our message did not get through last week but we will try again.
We split up into groups and each took one person and this is what we found out.
1. Ann Flinders (nee Chappelle)
Ann was 16 months older than Matthew and lived 40 years more than him. He did not see her for 9 years but in that time he showed his love for her by writing letters and one contained a compliment on her being " a friend who can feel and whose sensibility can inhale the rising thought". He also named a mountain and an island after her in the Bass Strait. His letters showed he was a passionate man who wanted to improve himself and be famous at almost any cost, including his relationship with Ann. They had one daughter. I think Matthew loved Ann very much but was very busy with his life and wanted to keep his reputation and got greedy for attention so he left her to go on voyages again.
2. Trim
Trim was flinders favourite animal and his best friend. He was born on a boat and adpoted by Fliners who said "he was the finest animal I ever saw" His relationship with Trim was very close because they spend a lot to time together.
3. George Bass
George Bass was good friend of Matthew Flinders. They met each other on the voyage to NSW. Bass and Flinders worked together brilliantly. They discovered the George River (named after him), the Bass Strait, (also named after him) and circumnavigated van Diemens land (Tasmania) I think they were good friends and liked each other a lot.
4. Joseph Banks.
Banks was 57 years of age and president of the Royal Society. He sailed to NSw with James Cook and loved it after that. Flinders sent a letter to Banks asking whether he could complete the European discovery of Australia. Banks then went to Lord Spencer who was a friend and asked to have a voyage approved with Flinders in charge.
I think Flinders and Banks had a good relationship because |Banks liked the idea of exploring and without Banks Flinders might not have been able to finish exploring Australia. They obviously respected each others abilities very highly.
5. Decaen.
He was involved in the jailing of Flinders . He was a follower of napolean and very dedicated to the French was side . We reckon Charles Decaen and Matthew Flinders has a very sour relationship.
