Dear Grade 4, Copeland Summerdale Primary
School,
I hope you are all well and
enjoying the rap as much as me. You've asked me some really good questions, so
let me get straight to them. What made me go up the bean
stalk?
I've always been an
adventurous soul. In my younger days I was part of an expedition that went deep
into the jungles of the Amazon, looking for a rare orchid. My husband Plato was
a botanist you see, and he headed the expedition. When I awoke to find the vine
growing out of my window, I thought that I could have my very own Jack and the
Beanstalk adventure. I must tell you sometime about my adventure in the
mountains of New Guinea. Ah, they were the days!
Why did I
take my paint set with me?
I take it everywhere with me. You never know when
inspiration will strike, so its always good to be prepared.
What sorts of things did I like to do
in my garden when I was a child?
What a fabulous question. Oh it takes me back! I
built cubby houses, and grew my own special flowers. I also built a frog farm
where many beautiful frogs enjoyed a wonderful life.
Why did I keep entering the flower competition even
though I always lost?
When one enters any competition one secretly hopes
that one will at least get a commendation. I suppose I lived in hope that
someone one day might say to me that even though my entries were little, they
were still beautiful. I think I also liked meeting other flower lovers. It was
such a wonderful social event. It never really worried me that I never won, and
not everyone was nasty to me like poor old Mrs Compost.
Why do I like painting exotic flowers so
much?
I've never thought about that, but I suppose it is
because it reflects my adventurous spirit.
When I go on the Internet do I look
up flower sites?
My word I do, as well as sites about skydiving and
philosophy.
Do people complain about the plants growing all
over my neighbourhood?
Initially some did, but it has now become a major
tourist attraction. I think Mrs Compost is secretly pleased that it has happened
because she feels very important heading up a new organisation called
'Neighbourhood Pruners'. She keeps it all looking very beautiful. That silly man
who never seems to remember to do his fly up is her second in
command.
Why did I name my cat
Socrates?
Socrates was the name of a great philosopher. My
sox seemed like a thoroughly clever little kitten, and as he got on so well with
my lovely husband Plato, Socrates seemed like a good name.
What is my favourite flower and
why?
Lovely question. I think it would have to be the
ordinary old common geranium, because if you really look at a geranium, it can
be very gorgeous, like many of the things we see all the time and forget just
how extraordinary they are.
Do you think my book "Making Paintings
Live" had anything to do with my painting coming alive?
Do you know, that is something I'm not sure about.
There is a recipe in that book , which says if you think about the love you
put into your creative work, then that is one of the things that will help it to
'come alive'. Maybe it happened because I love my Soxs so very much, and I liked
the bits he added to my painting, that some how it all worked that
way.
Must away, be nice to each other, even those like
Mrs Compost
Love from Mrs Millie
