There are the obvious differences between them one is Australian and one is English, girl and boy, and a tomboy and a wimp. She can’t get into his site and he is a net nerd. She is shy about her talent he isn’t. She is a single parent family and he is classic nuclear family – mum, dad + 2 kids. Saskia’s mum seems laid back but Noah’s dad is OTT! They don’t look anything like
their avatars.
However there are heaps more similarities. They are both imaginative and artistic. They both use the net to show their talent – Noah in his Max Hammer comic and Saskia by putting her music out there. They use the net to connect with people like them. They like getting their own way – Saskia threatens violence and Noah uses blackmail. They both have a friend who tries to keep them in touch with reality – Renee and Clyde. They are both sloppy in their clothes and are not very good with the boy/girl situations.
They are good at talking their way out of a situation or into one. They are witty, they use words to give sharp and funny comments on situations - when Saskia talks her way out of hacking into the librarian’s computer or Noah tries to talk the guys into playing on his soccer team. They both think they can see inside other people’s heads. They use cyberspace to communicate because they seem to be trying to find someone who understands them.
It is hard to decide if they would be friends – they have a lot of similar things in their lives. A lot of this is based on their chatroom conversations and as Renee says, ‘He’s not real, he’s words
on a screen.’ Saskia is pretty violent with Stempel so how would she react to Noah – she was going to paint her nails with his blood at the start. Does appearance matter?
Some of us think they are similar in ways that all teenagers are similar – school, parents, music, internet, friends, boy/girl stuff. Others of our group think that they are different in ways that all individuals are different. They have their own personalities, creativity and intelligence. They have different lives. Aren’t we all individuals?
