Hello Guyra Central School & all you other Rappers
Guyra makes some very good points about close- ups. Well done!
Have you considered that TV, being a form of communication, shares some
codes with our real life interactions and body language? Close- ups as
you point out very well, are a very intimate way of revealing
characters' thoughts, emotions and of making the point that the dialogue
or action at this stage is very important. They are saying "Pay
attention!" In real life we only see some-one's face in close up if we
our own face is very close to them: touching, kissing, shouting etc..
It's very intimate. No wonder then, that the close- up is so powerful.
Just as camera angles help create our response to characters, the size
of shot is also crucial. Try having a conversation standing a long way a
way from the other person- impossible! What effects do the other shot
sizes have? You may wish to video an interview several different ways
using different shot sizes. Did you know that research shows that when
we watch TV and see some-one being interviewed, we remember best what
has been said in close- up and then secondly in medium shot?
And sound effects.
When sound is used in this way it is a clever acknowledgement that the
audience are pretty media savvy. We all know that the buzzer has been
used for a long time on quiz programs to signal a wrong answer and the
bell symbolises a right answer. Most successful comedy TV shows now have
lots of clever and funny irreverent symbols like these, both sound and
visual. They reflect the self-referential nature of modern culture. You
Simpsons fans will be very aware of them- FBI agents Mulder and Scully
from "The X-Files" cross over into Springfield for an episode. Bart and
Lisa each have merchandise named for them on the show, while Itchy and
Scratchy have an entire theme park "a la Westworld" and "Jurassic Park."
institutions.
Keep those Raps rolling in!
Lee
