Rick,
You seem to have a good grasp of how Minh might feel - and why - especially
when he is leading his family into the unknown. Remember, an understanding
of the characters' emotions is the best way to follow the development of
any novel. Stories are not about events. They are about the people caught
up in those events. That is the rule I use when writing - it should be the
rule we use when reading. Empathy with the character makes the events real
- even in sci-fi and fantasy.
