Toan pp.45-47:
Age: 6
Feelings expressed and reasons for them:
1) He notices that the adults are nervous but does not
know why.
2) He is sad because his father is missing the
celebrations; and sad for Linh, because her father is
deadso she will always miss him at celebrations.
3) He is angry with Linh for not telling him about the
trip. He could have spend his money on sweets.
Language Features:
First person narrative; colloquial- "we went through
the forms"; "she fussed around like a constipated
chicken."
Mixture of short and long sentences, contractions
examples of this are "it's" and " didn't".
Grandma pp.37-39
Age: 60- arithmetic from dates and information on p4.
Feelings expressed and reasons for them:
Old- too old to leave with the family; concern that
she may not see Minh (eldest son) and Mai (eldest
daughter) and 5 of her grandchildren again; loving-
talks to her dead husband about Toan; then empty of
feeling like the message of the speakers fixed above
the house.
Language Features:
Third person narrative, like all the italic sections.
More formal, descriptive language- personification- "
the distance eats them up". No contractions.
Minh pp.47-49
Age: 31-32 see p4
Feelings expressed and reasons for them:
Apprehensive- he knows Tan will order the boat to
leave, without his family, if anything goes wrong;
hopeful that the journey will lead to a new life.
Language Features:
3rd person; formal and descriptive- detail about the
hold of the fishing boat and the harbour.
Hoa pp.51-54
Age: we're not told, maybe two or three years younger
than Minh.
Feelings expressed and reasons for them:
Pity and regret- for her mother who had been too proud
t accept Minh as a son-in-law and died without knowing
her grandsons; sends a silent message to Mai, her
sister-in-law, that she will take care of Linh.
Language Features:
3rd person again, formal, no contractions,
descriptive-" the blank depths of eyes whose pupils
scan the stars, but whose gaze is turned inwards".
