In Vietnamese people's perspective of families are that it means everything, so they love their familys. Also parents love their children. When the children have any difficult, the parent will help them and protect them. For example, The Vo family met a group of parites on the way to Malaysia and Australia. the parites wanted to take Phuong away and raped her,but Mai resisted them doing that. Mai asked the pirates to take her away insteat of Phuong. Also when Mai was leaving, Mai left a oreder to Minh that she asked him to take care of her two daughts. Minh did not resist the pirates to take his sister away because he knew the pirates would killed them all if anyone made them angry.
The different level between the members in Vietnamese family is extremely obvious. Elders are respected, and the youth must obey the elder.

There were three gangs in the novel, such as pirate Vo family met at sea, Cang's gang and Triple Ks. They all impacted on the Vo family a lot.
The pirates at the sea took Mai away and raped her instead of Phuong. It made Puong and Linh lost their mother. Phuong blamed herself all the time. She thought her mother left because of her. It also made her became a bad girl. In the camp, she went with Camg's gang.
Phuong liked to be together with Cang because he had the same situation as her. They all lost their parents, so Cangcould understand her feelings. Phuong thought Cang was a good guy because he was able to comfort her and take care of her. Once, the camp was on fire. because he run into the camp for rescuing Phuong, he died in the camp. Cang was a hero in the Vo familybecause he saved Phuong's life.
The Triple Kgang in Chabramatta had claimed Toan's friend, Kieu. Kieu's family did not take care of her, and Tang, the head of the ganglike her, so Kieu thoght Tang was a good person to go with. One day, Linh, Miro and the Triple K were in conflict. Because the Triple K ran after them by car, and Miro drove speedly, they had a accident at last.The doctor said Linh could not walk any more. It was caused by the Triple K.
